Cycling uses lots of energy and when you are in training or are cycling London to Amsterdam you will be covering some pretty big distances and using up a load of calories.

To keep your energy levels up there are lots of companies out there selling you energy gels, and cycle energy bars but if you cycle all the time the price tag on this is steep.  So we have found that the best thing to do is make your own homemade energy bars for cycling.
Over the years we have experimented with different types of snacks and treats to give you energy whilst cycling so we thought we should share with you are own recipe we concocted to make a healthy energy bar which is perfect to pop in your cycling jersey.
The great thing about these energy bars is that they have both slow and quick release energy and also cut down on sugar by using mashed banana to sweeten them.

Homemade Energy Bars for Cyling

250g Oats
50g mixed seeds
50 chopped nuts
50g chopped apricots
50g raisins
1 large banana – mashed
1 tablespoon golden syrup
200g butter
75g brown soft sugar
Preheat oven to 150 degrees

1) Place the sugar, syrup and butter into a large saucepan and heat slowly until the butter has melted.
2) Once the ingredients has melted remove from the heat and add the seeds, nuts, fruits, mashed banana and oats.
3) Bake in the centre of an oven for 40 minutes. Once removed from the oven leave to cool for 10 minutes before cutting into bars.
The best bit about this recipe is that you can alter the ingredients to suit your taste and add variety.  So for example you could swap apricots for dried cranberries or add some chopped nuts.
